Tulane University dermatologists will offer free skin-cancer screenings on Friday, Oct. 26 from noon to 5 p.m. in the Dematology Clinic, which is on the fifth floor of Tulane Medical Center, 1415 Tulane Ave. Although these examinations will be free, appointments are required and can be made by calling 504.988.1700.
Screenings offer the best hope of curing cancer because they catch the disease early, said Dr. Andrea Murina, an assistant professor of clinical medicine.
The most serious form of skin cancer is melanoma, which accounts for less than 5 percent of skin-cancer diagnoses but for most skin-cancer deaths. According to the American Cancer Society, 76,250 Americans will receive?melanoma diagnoses this year, and 9,180 will die from the disease.
