One Direction May Need A New Name! We Want Justin Bieber Money? The Charming 5?

With their label facing a $1 million lawsuit by a U.S. group with same name, MTV's Twitter followers suggest new names for U.K. boy band.

What's in a name? Apparently a lot, since British boy band sensation One Direction's label is facing a $1 million lawsuit  and request for an injunction from using the name by an American lad group with the same name.

While most people have never heard of the five-piece One Direction from the U.S., they got together before the reality TV-spawned U.K. version and are claiming that their more popular Brit doppelgangers are destroying the goodwill they've built up on these shores.

Though One Direction U.K.'s spokespeople have not commented on the suit and a representative for the band's U.S. label offered a no comment at press time, we set up the hashtag #New1DName to ask MTV News' Twitter followers to pre-emptively offer up some alternate names the lads should consider as they wait of the lawyers to hash things out.

If 1D do end up changing their name it wouldn't be the first time a band has had to do so because of a previously existing entity. Late '90s Irish boy band Westlife were originally known as Westside, but had to give up that name, and another British act, The Verve, had to add a "the" to their name to avoid a conflict with the famous Verve jazz label.

David Bowie was born David Jones, but decided to invent a stage name to avoid confusion with late Monkees' star Davy Jones and electronica duo the Chemical Brothers started out as the Dust Brothers, but switched things up after a lawsuit from the same-named production pair best known for helping to piece together the Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique. The Charlatans had to add a "UK" to their name to avoid a lawsuit from a defunct American band from the 1960s and Blink-182 decided to tack on some numbers to settle a dispute with the Irish band Blink.

Some bands have different names depending on where they are touring, such as Jack White's side group the Raconteurs, who are known as the Saboteurs in Australia for legal reasons. For similar reasons, reunited Brit poppers Suede have to tour as the London Suede in the U.S. (see also Wham UK and The English Beat).

Sometimes, though, bands have enough cash to buy the name they really want, such as grunge gods Nirvana, who settled out of court with a London group from the 1960s for around $160,000.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied sexual reproduction in tiny fruit flies to learn more about how DNA is randomly shuffled when the genes of two parents combine to create a new individual.

They found that this recombination of genetic material allows for damaging elements of DNA ? which might cause disease or other potential drawbacks ? to be weeded out within a few generations. Individuals who inherit healthy genes tend to flourish and pass on their DNA to the next generation, while weaker individuals are more likely to die without reproducing.

The findings, made possible by genome sequencing technology, provide strong evidence to back up a long-standing theory that sexual reproduction, rather than asexual cloning of an individual, has long-term benefits for a species.

Scientists studied how the DNA of fruit flies is affected when the recombination of DNA does not occur. They found that harmful DNA quickly accumulates, making the species weaker overall in the long term.

Researchers say the findings may help inform the development of crop species with high yields. The study, published in Genome Biology and Evolution, was supported by the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Natural Environment Research Council.

Trayvon Martin call was "mistake, not deliberate": NBC

NEW YORK (Reuters) - NBC News' decision to air an edited call from George Zimmerman to police in the moments before he shot Trayvon Martin was "a mistake and not a deliberate act to misrepresent the phone call," according to the president of the network's news division.

The edit in question, which aired on the network's flagship "Today" morning show last week,?made it appear that Zimmerman told police that Martin was black without being prompted, when, in fact, the full tape reveals that the neighborhood watch captain only did so when responding to a question posed by a dispatcher.

Under growing public pressure to explain the incident,?NBC News President Steve Capus?provided Reuters with the fullest explanation to date of how the edited call made it on air and what the network is doing to prevent such a consequential error from happening again.

Capus?confirmed a previous Reuters report that?an internal network investigation had determined that a producer made the editing error, and that the network's?editorial controls - including senior broadcast producer oversight, script editors and often legal and standards department reviews of sensitive material to be broadcast - simply missed the selective editing of the phone call.

Two sources at the network told Reuters the Miami-based producer of the segment had been fired on Thursday.

Capus said "several people" involved were disciplined, though he declined to specify the nature of the disciplinary actions, saying they were internal personnel matters.

Sources at the network told Reuters on Thursday that NBC News executives did not know the emergency call was misleadingly edited until news reports surfaced days later on blogs including?newsbusters.org?and?Breitbart.com.

Those blogs, along with media critics and rival networks, have charged that the edited call has inflamed racial tensions in an already volatile situation.

Sources inside the network have told Reuters that?NBC News brass interviewed more than a dozen staffers during its investigation of the matter.

As part of the investigation, the producer who edited the call?was questioned extensively about motivation, and it was determined that the person had cut the video clip down to meet a maximum time requirement for the length of the segment - a common pressure in morning television - and inadvertently edited the call in a way that proved misleading.

NBC News has apologized for the incident, saying in a statement to Reuters earlier this week that there was "an editing error in the production process," but insisting the results of the internal investigation would not be announced publicly.

Capus said that the network "takes its responsibility seriously" and has undertaken rigorous efforts to formalize the editorial safeguards in place at the network. Externally, media critics including Howard Kurtz, host of CNN's "Reliable Sources" and a columnist for The Daily Beast, have criticized the network for allowing Sharpton to play a dual role as both activist and commentator.

"Even commentators have to abide by certain rules," Kurtz wrote last month. "And in this case, by playing both sides of the camera, Rev. Al has obliterated them."

Internally, some NBC news staffers have complained that Sharpton's unique role in the case has?compounded the damage to NBC News' reputation that the edited tape caused, and contributed to an impression among its critics that the network as a whole is biased against Zimmerman, according to sources. Capus refuted that claim.

"Reverend Sharpton is a talk show host on MSNBC," Capus said. "We believe there's a distinction between the role he plays and our front line journalists who are part of NBC's news gathering and reporting. This is a?large news organization that has many people involved in any number of different aspects of coverage and commentary.?That's the distinction we've made as a news organization."

MSNBC chief executive Phil Griffin has defended Sharpton's dual role as well, saying that as long as the longtime civil rights activist is upfront about his advocacy activity, he would be allowed on a "case by case basis" to both participate in and comment for MSNBC on issues and stories that interest him. Griffin has credited Sharpton with turning the Martin case into a national news story.

NBC is owned by NBC Universal, a unit of Comcast Corp.

Terry Williams said he slipped into petty theft when he was unable to find employment, after serving four years in the United States Navy.

And the 46-year-old Louisiana native said the petty theft convictions eventually mounted into a felony.

?Because of that one box they have on the job application, about checking your background, your history,? said Williams, who is also a Grambling State University graduate. ?My criminal record is nothing major, drastic. It?s just an accumulation of petty thefts.?

?I just had a problem last year with a violation deal. I had a drink and all that.? I just been out of jail since last year ? July. I just want to get myself in order,? he said. ?Employers prefer people that don?t have records. Right now I?m open to anything.?

So Williams arrived about 30 minutes before the scheduled 10 a.m. Monday start time to assure his chance of finding employment at the Second Chance Career and Resource Fair held right outside Inglewood City Hall, near the hall?s Community Room.

The event, which was also held last year, included on-site computers with Web access for job applications, more than 50 hiring employers and pre-event workshops on job search techniques and record expungement ? which in particular drew 43-year-old Los Angeles resident Michael Johnson, who needed some traffic convictions expunged.

?Its (the convictions) been stopping me from getting a job,? said Johnson, who looked for telemarketing and warehouse positions. ?It?s been like driving with a suspended license and not paying the fines. I actually got a few of them done already.?

And new to this year?s fair is a ?Dress for Success? workshop, as well as the issuing out of clothing vouchers for those who need the proper attire for job interviews, said Carl Frierson, Employment Program Manager for the California Employment Development Department.

Frierson said he hopes that fair will be an annual event in Inglewood, and already has Mayor James T. Butts Jr. backing.

?It is extremely critical, as we move forward, to employ more of our residents, so we?ll be able to spend more locally,? Butts said. ?People that were incarcerated have that stigma ? society is going to have to revise its attitude about people have had paid their debts to society. People who have paid their penance need to be on an equal playing field.?

?As far as veterans, I don?t feel the country recognizes the debt that it owes to people who have risked their lives so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we do,? he said. ?They should get a preference ? to be honest with you, when it comes to hiring.?
