Obama, Romney back on attack as campaign hits final stretch

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney were back on the attack on Thursday, breaking a storm-induced campaign truce to hit the road and pound home their closing messages in the final stretch of a tight battle for the White House.

With five days left until Tuesday's election, Obama resurrected his 2008 "change" slogan and said he was the only candidate who had actually fought for it. Romney criticized Obama as a lover of big government who would expand the federal bureaucracy.

National polls show the race is essentially deadlocked, and Obama and Romney will spend the final days in eight swing states that will decide who wins the 270 electoral votes needed to capture the White House.

Obama made Wisconsin the first stop on a four-state swing on Thursday that will also take him to rallies in Nevada and Colorado before spending the night in Ohio. Romney planned a full day of campaigning across Virginia.

"You may be frustrated at the pace of change, but you know what I believe, you know where I stand," Obama told a crowd of 2,600 people on an airport tarmac in Wisconsin, a vital piece of his electoral strategy. "I know what change looks like because I've fought for it."

Romney criticized Obama's comment in an interview aired by MSNBC on Monday that he would like to consolidate government agencies that deal with business issues in a new department under a Secretary of Business.

"I don't think adding a new chair to his cabinet will help add millions of jobs on Main Street," Romney said.

Obama and Romney had put campaigning on hold for several days as the historic storm Sandy pounded the eastern seaboard, leaving a trail of destruction and forcing Obama to turn his attention to storm relief.

That pause produced some unexpected benefits for Obama, who won warm praise from Republican Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey, a Romney supporter, and spent days directing federal relief efforts in a show of presidential leadership that largely sidelined Romney.

But both candidates returned to political attacks on their first day back on the trail, although they struck a slightly more positive tone than usual in trying to woo undecided voters and push their own supporters to vote.

SWING-STATE ADVANTAGE FOR OBAMA

Obama has a slight advantage in polls in several key swing states, fueled primarily by a small but steady lead in the vital battleground of Ohio - a crucial cog in any winning scenario for either candidate - and slight leads in Wisconsin, Iowa and Nevada.

Barring any surprises elsewhere, Obama can win a second term by capturing the Midwestern bastions of Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa, and his schedule was aimed at shoring up his safety net there.

Obama plans to visit Ohio on each of the last four days of the campaign, and plans two more trips to Wisconsin and Iowa.

So far, Obama has planned just one visit each to Florida and Virginia, where most polls give Romney a slight lead. Romney will hit Wisconsin and Ohio on Friday, and New Hampshire, Iowa and Colorado on Saturday.

Romney plans to finish up his campaign on Monday night in New Hampshire, the state where he launched his bid last year.

Romney's campaign has aired ads in recent days in the Democratic-leaning states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Minnesota, hoping to put them in play after polls showed the races tightening but Obama still ahead.

But so far Romney has not scheduled campaign visits to any of those states. Romney's running mate Paul Ryan visited Minnesota earlier this week, and could hit Pennsylvania over the weekend.

Romney aides say the campaign's moves into those three new states were a sign of their growing momentum, although Obama aides described them as a desperate ploy to find new paths to 270 electoral votes.

A Reuters/Ipsos national online poll on Thursday showed the race remained effectively deadlocked, with Obama at 47 percent to Romney's 46 percent. Most national polls showed roughly similar results.

A series of swing state polls found Obama was clinging to slender leads in five of the eight most heavily contested states - Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nevada and New Hampshire. Romney in most polls has a slight lead in Florida, while Virginia and Colorado were effectively tied.

Down Home: Highlights from Homeschool Counseling

{photo by Jenny Curzan}

A few weeks ago, we hosted a ?Homeschool Counseling Seminar? on each track, as a forum to share ideas, problem-solve, and support each other in home education. For those who attended, we hope you found some inspiration and a handful of ideas to try. For those who were not able to attend, here are some of the tips, resources, and thoughts from those two days, that we wanted to pass along to everyone.?

First, some insights and ideas that were shared about homeschooling and tackling various issues:

? One parent is finding that starting her homeschool day with a few positive words to her kids about what a great job they are doing, or why she is thankful to have this time with them, is doing a lot to help her own attitude and mindset, as well as fostering a better relationship with her kids. It?s good to frequently remind yourself (and your kids) of the reasons why you have chosen this type of education.

? It?s important to protect your homeschooling time as much as you are able to, and to give your kids the same attention you expect them to give you. Checking email, taking phone calls, running errands during homeschool hours... sometimes it works out fine, but most people generally felt their home days were better when they guarded that time.

? When working with students who want to be more independent with a subject, such as math or writing, one parent found it helpful to have frequent checkpoints to make sure the student was on the right track, rather than allowing them to complete the entire assignment without checking in, only to discover it was all done incorrectly.?

? Tips for wiggly ones who can?t sit still for a math lesson (or any subject): Look at the problem, run and touch the wall, then come back and write the answer. Or do math problems outside with chalk (then mom can copy them later into the book). Try jumping rope or another physical activity right before sitting down to learn, or even during a lesson. It really helps some kids to focus and retain more.

? Once in awhile to mix things up at home, or when you feel you?re in a rut, maybe try putting a couple of the home subjects on the back burner for just a week, and replacing that time with a fun creative project the kids can get involved in, like something from the blog post about using butcher paper, or crafts that go along with our history, literature, or science (a google search can reveal lots of possibilities). Or ask your kids what they are interested in - they may have ideas in mind for a project they?d love to work on.

? Keep reading aloud to your kids, even the high schoolers!

? One parent of high schoolers who has been homeschooling for a long time says to believe in what you are doing, in the school, in the teachers, and in your kids. Let your kids see that, and they will be successful.

And now, the practical stuff and resources (these are all parent recommendations shared during the seminar):

? The Blackgold Library system?s Overdrive program is a great way to download audiobooks and books for kindle or iPad, for free.

? When you just need to put on a video for the kids, Liberty?s Kids is a series about the American Revolution. You can purchase it, get the discs through Netflix, or find them on youtube.

? Crayola makes Bath Markers that are nice for practicing math facts, recitations, or spelling in the bath or shower!

Thanks to all who attended and shared their triumphs, trials, and suggestions. We appreciated hearing one another?s ideas and hope you can gain from these collected tips as well.?

Let?s talk:?Do you have something to add to this list that would be helpful to another homeschooling parent out there? Please comment below!

Over 60 percent of aspen in parts of Utah, Colorado are triploid, new study shows

A large proportion of aspen in the western U.S. sport an extra set of chromosomes in their cells, a phenomenon termed triploidy, according to new research published Oct. 31 in the open access journal PLoS ONE by Karen Mock from Utah State University and colleagues at several other institutions. In some areas of southern Utah and Colorado, over 60% of aspen trees are triploid.

Though triploid trees are not uncommon, this genetic anomaly can cause altered physical traits including sterility or reduced fertility. Although a triploid aspen clone may reproduce with root suckers, the scientists say, it is unlikely to produce viable seed.

Mapping the rates of triploidy in aspen to latitude, glacial history and regional variation in climate, the researchers found that these rates were highest in unglaciated, drought-prone regions. Wolf, professor in USU's Department of Biology, notes triploid plants often have larger cells, which might affect how plants cope with different conditions. "It is possible triploid aspen can better absorb water than diploids and are therefore better suited to withstand dry conditions, but they may be especially vulnerable to severe drought," he says.

Iconic fall foliage of the north-western forests, aspen populations have been declining in recent years; their high mortality rates have been attributed to drought, insect pests and a mysterious syndrome termed "Sudden Aspen Decline" (SAD). The new research is based on data collected over more than eight years by the Forest Service, a NASA Biodiversity program, and several researchers and volunteers.

Lead author on the study Mock says, "Though our findings come from many years of study, they provide an important starting point as we go forward. What we're learning will help us understand both the past and the future of aspen in the West."

Earnings Preview: Berkshire Hathaway 3Q earnings

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? When Berkshire Hathaway Inc. releases third-quarter earnings Friday, they will be dissected by investors looking for clues about the economy's health, what CEO Warren Buffett might invest in next, as well as any estimate of Berkshire's insurance losses from Superstorm Sandy.

Investors will also be interested to see how Berkshire's BNSF Railway fared as major freight railroads grapple with weak coal demand.

But the bottom-line profit the company reports could differ significantly from the operating results for Berkshire's 80-odd businesses because the paper value of its derivatives tied to several stock-market indexes varies widely.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Berkshire owns several large insurance and reinsurance companies, including Geico and General Re, so it often pays out sizeable claims after any major disaster.

For instance, Berkshire recorded a $2.4 billion loss from the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Insurance losses from Superstorm Sandy aren't likely to be a big concern for Berkshire, which has about $40 billion cash on hand, but they will affect fourth-quarter profit.

Jeff Matthews, an investor who wrote "Secrets in Plain Sight: Business & Investing Secrets of Warren Buffett," said it will be interesting to see how BNSF fared after other railroads reported lower coal volume and increases in crude oil and automotive shipments.

Matthews expects derivative contracts to be somewhat positive for Berkshire in the quarter. Last year Berkshire recorded a $1.53 billion paper loss on its derivative contracts and investments in the third quarter.

Several Berkshire subsidiaries are tied closely to residential housing ? including Shaw carpet, Acme Brick, Clayton Homes and HomeServices of America real estate ? so the quarterly report will offer some insight into the U.S. housing industry's recovery.

WHY IT MATTERS: Buffett's remarkable investing track record has earned the company a devoted following. Berkshire is also watched closely because the conglomerate's results offer a glimpse into a variety of industries.

WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect Berkshire to report earnings of $1.38 per Class B share on $39.04 billion in revenue.

LAST YEAR'S QUARTER: Berkshire's net income fell 24 percent last year to $2.28 billion, or 92 cents per share, because of a sharp decline in the paper value of its derivative contracts.

Take Hurricane Sandy seriously, East Coast residents are warned

The East Coast prepares as the storm approaches.

NEW YORK ? East Coast residents prepared Saturday for the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy, which forecasters expect to make landfall as soon as Monday night and then merge with a sprawling winter storm to create weather havoc for tens of millions of people across one-third of the nation.

From Maine to the Carolinas, federal and state officials urged residents and businesses to prepare for the worst ? drenching rain, flooding, high winds, highs seas, snow and widespread power outages. Federal officials said the impact would extend into the Ohio Valley.

Even though Sandy was still at least two days away, residents along the northeastern Atlantic Coast, mindful of possible transit shutdowns and bombarded by storm warnings, kicked into preparation mode.

PHOTOS: Hurricane Sandy

Battery-operated lanterns, batteries, flashlights, tape, plastic tarps and rope vanished from shelves at hardware stores like Brown's, on the Rockaway peninsula in the New York City borough of Queens.

But nothing was in as much demand as sandbags, said Brown's owner Noni Signoretti, as customers lined up at cash registers. "We got 1,000 in, and within an hour they were gone," she said. The shop was expecting to receive 4,400 additional sandbags, and it planned to open two hours earlier than normal Sunday to accommodate the expected rush.

Like some on the peninsula, which was under a mandatory evacuation order when Hurricane Irene hit last year, Signoretti blamed much of the rush for supplies on the media frenzy surrounding Sandy.

"It's very similar to what we had with Irene ? the panic," she said. "And what's happening today is that the weather is so nice that people have the opportunity to walk around in a panic."

Indeed, the wind was relatively calm, the ocean waves were no bigger than normal, and the boardwalk was dotted with its usual Saturday array of joggers, dog walkers and residents sitting on benches staring out at the water.

Neither Signoretti nor one of her regular customers, Jeanette Bernstein, planned to leave if an evacuation order was issued. Bernstein heeded last year's order after preparing her home for flooding that never came.

"I saved the sandbags from the last time," said Bernstein, who planned to flood-proof her home this year with sandbags, plastic and boards hammered over the windows. But she said her days of fleeing storms were over.

"I've been here so many years, I remember the flood when we were in rowboats," Bernstein said. That was Hurricane Donna of 1960, which sent the ocean and the bay washing over the peninsula. "If I lived through that," she added, "I can live through anything."

In New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie warned against such complacency even as he sympathized with skepticism about forecasters' predictions. "We have to be prepared for the worst here," he said. "I can be as cynical as any of you, but when the storm comes, if it's as bad as they're predicting it will be, you're going to wish you weren't as cynical."

Dozens were killed as Sandy passed through the Caribbean late last week. The storm weakened but was upgraded Saturday to a Category 1 hurricane and was expected to turn west and make landfall late Monday or early Tuesday, with forecasters suggesting Delaware or southern New Jersey as possible locations.

The storm is expected to merge with a cold front from Canada ? creating a dangerous system that could reach 800 miles in diameter, affecting a third of the United States. Winds up to 75 mph were measured Saturday as far as 100 miles from the eye of the storm, which remained over the ocean.

Even before Sandy makes landfall, conditions are going to get worse, said Rick Knabb, director of the National Hurricane Center.

"There's no avoiding a significant storm surge event over a large area," Knabb told reporters. "We just can't pinpoint who's going to get the worst."

Flood warnings are in effect in four states. Storm surges up to 4 feet were expected in parts of Delaware, and more than 2 feet of snow could bury West Virginia. A vast area from Virginia to New York could see up to 8 inches of rain over the next week.

"Don't get lulled tomorrow when there's not a lot of rain and not a lot of wind," New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said at a news conference Saturday. "This is a dangerous storm. I think we're going to be OK, but if it were to strengthen unexpectedly or change its expected path, it could do a lot of damage."

The storm may cause major disruptions for travelers going to and from the East Coast over the next several days. Airlines said they were closely monitoring the storm, and they urged travelers to regularly check the status of their flights.

Several major airlines waived fees for passengers wanting to change their reservations, subject to some restrictions. Delta Air Lines said travelers could change flights at no cost for travel to 15 states and Washington, D.C. United Airlines made a similar offer to reschedule flights for no fee for travel in and out of nearly 30 airports along the East Coast.

Hurricane Sandy had already forced President Obama's campaign to scuttle one of Vice President Joe Biden's two scheduled stops in Virginia on Saturday. Aides to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney say they are canceling their travel to make sure they don't get in the way of state and local officials bracing for the storm.

Season over for Browns LB Scott Fujita

BEREA, Ohio (AP) ? Browns linebacker Scott Fujita will be placed on injured reserve with a neck injury, ending his stormy season.

Fujita, one four players suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for his role in the New Orleans Saints' bounty scandal, was inactive the past two games. He last started on Oct. 7 in a game against the New York Giants. Browns coach Pat Shurmur does not know if Fujita, an 11-year veteran and one of the league's most informed players, will retire.

The 33-year-old Fujita had neck surgery in college.

Fujita had his three-game suspension reduced to one by Goodell. However, Fujita was angered by a letter he received from the commissioner and harshly criticized Goodell for his handling of the Saints' situation and questioned his track record on player safety.

Color Kinetics Unveils London Eye

Photo copyright David Morrell, courtesy Lighting Technology Projects.

Color Kinetics Inc. announced last week the unveiling of its latest international landmark installation, the British Airways London Eye. Named the "World's Leading Attraction" this year by the World Travel Awards, the London Eye is the world's tallest observation wheel at 450? high, and is the newest in a growing number of high-profile destinations to undergo a complete lighting overhaul with Color Kinetics' LED lighting technology.

"The London Eye has become a 21st century symbol for Britain, and it's a thrill to see this long-planned project come to realization. We've achieved an ambitious goal in bringing dynamic, visually appealing color to the structure while at the same time eliminating the maintenance costs and requirements of the previous fluorescent system. We're extremely pleased with the results, and believe Londoners and visitors alike will agree," said Kevin Dyer, Head of Technical Operations for the British Airways London Eye.

Situated on the South Bank of the River Thames and often called the "Gateway to London," the London Eye is visited by more than 10,000 people daily. It was previously lit by fluorescent tubes that proved costly to maintain, and required the manual installation of gels to produce colored light for special events.

Color Kinetics was approached to replace this system with an LED-based alternative. Approximately 640 ColorCast? 14 units were supplied, installed and programmed by UK-based Architainment Lighting Ltd. and Lighting Technology Projects. Each unit may be individually programmed to generate millions of colors that are seamlessly produced by Chromacore? technology, as opposed to the use of colored gels. This technology gives the London Eye the cost-effective ability to display precise colors for corporate clients and special occasions, while predominantly displaying white light

"Internationally recognized installations have become one of the benchmarks that define Color Kinetics' market success, and we're honored to put our signature on an iconic structure like the British Airways London Eye," says Bill Sims, president and CEO, Color Kinetics. "This project reflects an accelerating trend as maintenance-intensive lighting systems are displaced by LED alternatives - first in applications of color and increasingly in the use of white light. Though six years away, we can envision the Eye playing a colorful, welcoming role when London hosts the 2012 Olympic Games."

Today Color Kinetics' lighting systems are installed in many notable sites in and around London. These include Victoria Plaza, Berkeley Homes Tower at Tabard Square, Plantation Place, Great Ormond Street Hospital, City Place House, 27 Knightsbridge, and Millennium Square at Bristol Harbour.

The newly Color Kinetics-illuminated London Eye is visible from more than a mile away. Because Color Kinetics' lighting systems are compatible with the industry-standard DMX protocol, the ColorCast 14 units integrate seamlessly with two Pharos LPC2 controllers, enabling the creation of dynamic light shows on demand. The rugged, exterior-grade units incorporate Powercore? technology to directly accept line voltage, eliminating the need for external power supplies and easing installation.

Clintons land in Haiti to showcase industrial park

CARACOL, Haiti (AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton encouraged foreigners to invest in Haiti as she and her husband Bill led a star-studded delegation gathered Monday to inaugurate a new industrial park at the center of U.S. efforts to help the country rebuild after the 2010 earthquake.

Actors Sean Penn and Bill Stiller, fashion designer Donna Karan and British business magnate Richard Branson were among the luminaries at the opening of the new Caracol Industrial Park, which is projected to create thousands of jobs more than 100 miles from the quake-ravaged capital of Port-au-Prince.

Hillary Rodham Clinton told a roomful of investors gathered for a luncheon that she had made Haiti a priority when she became Secretary of State.

"We had learned that supporting long-term prosperity in Haiti meant more than providing aid," she said. "It required investments in infrastructure and the economy that would help the Haitian people achieve their own dreams.

"So we shifted our assistance to investments to address some of the biggest challenges facing this country: creating jobs and sustainable economic growth," she added.

Earlier Monday, thousands of Haitians lined the roadway to wave at her motorcade as it wound its way from the airport. Hillary Rodham Clinton and other U.S. officials, including Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Democrat from Vermont, toured a housing development for industrial park workers supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development.

The Secretary of State noted there were three presidents gathered in one room to celebrate the opening: her husband, former American President Bill Clinton, current Haitian President Michel Martelly and his predecessor Rene Preval.

Bill Clinton, now a U.N. special envoy for Haiti, arrived in Caracol separately from his wife.

The Clintons and their allies hope that the $300 million industrial facility will transform the northern part of this impoverished country by providing thousands of desperately needed jobs.

But some Haitians say the industrial park does little more than replicate failed efforts from the past and will benefit outsiders more than Haitians. They also worry it will harm some of the few pieces of undamaged environment that still exist in Haiti.

"It's really all-in on this project, and there's a high bar to deliver," said Laurent Dubois, a historian who teaches at Duke University and is author of "Haiti: The Aftershocks of History." ''It really needs to deliver in a big way so that people will think, yeah, this was the right thing to do."

The stakes are high in large part because the Clintons have been so heavily involved.

The Caracol project was in the works before the earthquake but it became a top priority for the Obama administration soon after the disaster. Hillary Rodham Clinton's chief of staff, Cheryl Mills, has made almost monthly visits to the site on Haiti's northern coast.

Bill Clinton also took an interest. He attended the project's groundbreaking a year ago with Martelly.

The $124 million put in by the U.S. makes the park Washington's biggest single investment in the aftermath of the quake and it is certain to shape the legacy of the Clintons, who last visited Haiti together in 1975 on a wedding gift following their honeymoon in Mexico.

Monday's trip is Hillary Rodham Clinton's third to Haiti since the earthquake, and there have been more than a dozen visits by her husband, who was co-chairman of an earthquake recovery panel before its mandate ended a year ago.

The industrial park to be inaugurated by the Clintons was built on a 617-acre (250-hectare) site meant to "decentralize" Haiti's economy away from the crowded capital of Port-au-Prince and help develop the long-neglected countryside.

The anchor tenant is South Korean apparel giant Sae-A Trading Co. Ltd, which begun production in May. It has agreed to create 20,000 permanent jobs within six years and also build 5,000 houses. Backers say the entire park has the potential to generate up to 65,000 jobs in all.

Sae-A, which shipped 76,000 T-shirts to Wal-Mart in the United States on Oct. 15, says it is training 1,050 people it has hired, 70 percent of them from the area surrounding Caracol. Daniel Cho, a representative of Sae-A in Haiti, said the employees will be paid almost $5 for eight hours of work.

A local paint manufacturing company, Peintures Caraibes SA, became the second tenant in July and will export paint made by Sherwin Williams along with its own paint; production begins next month. It's supposed to hire 350 people.

Details are still being worked on to bring in other tenants, but the project's architects hope its duty-free status and a 15-year tax holiday will lure more.

Everyone agrees Haiti needs jobs. The country of about 10 million people is among the world's poorest, and unemployment and underemployment hover around 60 percent.

Despite the promises of up to 65,000 jobs at the site, and projections of possibly 133,000 more jobs through related cottage industries, the Caracol project has drawn much skepticism.

Critics say it's not much different from the factories to make baseballs for the U.S. sport that were built in the 1970s and 1980s under the regime of playboy dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier.

Those jobs prompted thousands of farmers to leave their fields for the capital, and agricultural areas suffered from neglect. Shantytowns like Cite Soleil emerged to house the new workers. The factories got tax breaks but there was no income to offset Duvalier's alleged plundering of state coffers.

Haiti was supposed to become the "Taiwan of the Caribbean" but instead suffered through economic collapse brought on by political instability.

"This is: Been there, done that," Alex Dupuy, a Haiti-born sociologist who teaches at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, said of the Caracol project.

Because of the tenants' tax breaks, outside investors will have more to gain than Haitians, he said.

"This is not a strategy that is meant to provide Haiti with any measure of sustainable development ... The only reason those industries come to Haiti is because the country has the lowest wages in the region," Dupuy said.

Backers of Caracol stress that it will bring tens of thousands of jobs to an area where subsistence farming has long been the only alternative to migration. Jean Cherenfant, mayor of Cap-Haitien, a seaside city 13 miles (21 kilometers) from Caracol, sees the facility as a boon.

"We don't have a lot of employers here, and we're talking about several hundred thousand jobs," Cherenfant said by telephone. "I will not go along with those people who are pessimistic."

Police release dash cam video of car-chase crash that killed Texas teen

HOUSTON?Police have released dash cam video of the crash that killed 16-year-old Shawn Williams over the weekend.

The video shows an officer starting the chase of the fleeing pickup truck. It had been seen at a shoplifting incident at San Jacinto Mall, and then was found minutes later at another shoplifting attempt at a nearby Academy store.

The truck shown bouncing through a ditch had just rammed a Baytown police vehicle, and then raced south on Garth road at a high rate of speed.

The officer backs off and keeps a visual on the truck as it races in oncoming traffic and blows through red lights.

Two miles later, as another officer is laying down spike strips, there is an explosion. The footage shows the car holding Williams and 17-year old Shay Hollingshead in flames. Two people are seen running, later identified as Shannon Joe Chauncey and Jennifer Jenkins, who were captured moments later.

Police believe they did all they could to avoid the loss of life. Williams? family says that is not their concern right now. Their focus is on celebrating the life of a young man loved by everyone who knew him.

"We teach our kids that ?live life like it?s your last day," said Shawn?s father. "He would do everything. And he always lived for the benefit of someone else."

"I didn?t think I would ever see people in the community this attached to one of my children, to our family, you know. Thank you," said Shawn?s mother Pleshette.

The argument over his death and who is to blame will wait for another day. In the meantime, Shay Hollingshead remains in critical condition.

Bayonet company calls Obama 'ignorant' because troops still use bayonets

(Hollie McKay, Fox News) --?Designers, stylists and fashion industry publicists routinely clamor to outfit First Lady Michelle Obama, with press releases flying out the door any time she sports a certain brand. Fashion publications praise her designer selections and several books have been published that are solely devoted to analyzing her style and taste.

However, the fashion world has remained particularly quiet on the Ann Romney fashion front, with many questioning whether or not outspoken Obama supporter Anna Wintour is keeping stylists and designers away, silently threatening their standing should they endeavor to promote their outfitting of the wife of a Republican presidential hopeful.

Discovery of biological energy-sensing switch could have broad implications for biology and medicine

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? Biochemists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have discovered a genetic sequence that can alter its host gene's activity in response to cellular energy levels. The scientists have found this particular energy-sensing switch in bacterial genes, which could make it a target for a powerful new class of antibiotics. If similar energy-sensing switches are also identified for human genes, they may be useful for treating metabolism-related disorders such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

"This discovery adds a new dimension to our understanding of how cells sense and manage their energy levels, which is one of the most important processes in biology," said the study's senior author, Martha J. Fedor, a professor the departments of Chemical Physiology and Molecular Biology and a member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI.

The findings are described online ahead of print on October 21, 2012, in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.

A Fuel Sensor

This type of gene-switching sequence is known as a riboswitch because it appears on the strand of ribonucleic acid (RNA) that is first transcribed from a gene's DNA. Unlike other known riboswitches, which have relatively limited functions, this one acts as a sensor for the basic molecular fuel that powers all living cells and controls many genes.

The newly discovered riboswitch detects a small molecule known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the standard unit of chemical energy in all known organisms on our planet. Scientists had thought that cells use only large and relatively complex proteins to sense these all-important energy molecules and adjust cell activities accordingly. No one had found ATP sensors among riboswitches, which can alter cell activity at a more fundamental level -- usually by interrupting a gene's transcription from DNA.

Moreover, previously described riboswitches are relatively simple feedback sensors that affect narrow metabolic pathways. Most of them merely sense and adjust the expression rate of their own host gene. "This is the first riboswitch that is known to be involved in global metabolic regulation," said Fedor.

In recent years, the Fedor team had found hints that such a riboswitch could exist. Many RNA sequences with possible riboswitch activity had never been characterized, and several riboswitches in bacteria sense molecules that are closely related to ATP. Fedor and a graduate student in her laboratory, Peter Y. Watson, therefore set out to find bacterial riboswitches that could indeed sense ATP.

Caught in the Act

The task was more challenging than it might have seemed. Watson could not simply expose suspected riboswitches to ATP and see which ones stuck best to the energy molecules. ATP is present in high concentrations in cells, and its interactions with its known protein sensors are necessarily fleeting, low-affinity affairs. Interactions with a riboswitch would be expected to look the same. "Such interactions are really too weak to be detected using traditional methods," Watson said. But he found evidence that an RNA interaction with an ATP-like molecule would occur in a way that allows the brief coupling to be caught in the act -- using a burst of ultraviolet radiation, which can create a strong chemical crosslink between two molecules.

In this way, he discovered a stretch of apparent ATP-binding RNA known as the ydaO motif. Watson performed structure-mapping analyses of ydaO to confirm that it binds to ATP and to determine precisely where it binds. Attaching ydaO to a "reporter" gene, he found that in bacterial cells, the reporter gene's expression level stayed low when ATP levels were normal and rose sharply when ATP levels dropped -- as would be expected if ydaO is really an ATP-sensing riboswitch. Even in unaltered cells of a test bacterium, B. subtilis, levels of the genes that normally contain the ydaO motif rose and fell in the same way in response to changing ATP levels.

The ydaO motif occurs in the large subset of bacteria known as gram-positive bacteria. Across these bacterial species, it has been found, to date, on 580 separate genes. "These ydaO-regulated genes encode proteins that have a wide variety of functions, from cell wall metabolism to amino acid transport," Watson said. "It makes sense that a riboswitch in control of such disparate processes would be responding to a central metabolite such as ATP."

New Possibilities

The finding has basic scientific importance because it is the first known example of a riboswitch that binds ATP; it is also the first known riboswitch that has such broad regulatory functions. "It opens up the possibility that RNA switches are involved in the general regulation of metabolism," said Fedor.

The fact that ydaO motifs serve as "off-switches" for key bacterial genes also makes them a potential target for new antibiotics. "Hitting these riboswitches with a small-molecule, ATP-mimicking drug so that they can't turn on genes that promote bacterial growth and survival could be a viable approach," said Fedor.

Her laboratory will now search for other ATP-sensing riboswitches in bacteria and in higher organisms, including humans. A human ATP-sensing riboswitch, if targeted appropriately by drugs, might be able to alter cell activity in ways that help treat common metabolic disorders. Type 2 diabetes, which presently affects several hundred million people worldwide, is known to feature the improper regulation of ATP levels in cells.

Funding for the study, "The ydaO motif is an ATP-sensing riboswitch in Bacillus subtilis," was provided by the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI.

Garth Brooks inducted into Country Music Hall of Fame

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) - Singer Garth Brooks received country music's highest honor with an induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, calling the event "the biggest night" of his chart-topping career.

Oklahoma native Brooks, 50, was inducted on Sunday in a star-studded ceremony featuring music greats including Bob Seger, George Strait and James Taylor, all of whom Brooks has cited as influences.

"There are big days in your career, like when you join the Grand Ole Opry...and I didn't think anything would top those. I might have lied. This may be the biggest night of my of career. I'm so excited and nervous, and feel so undeserving, all at the same time," Brooks told Reuters on the red carpet.

The singer is the best-selling solo country music artist in U.S. popular music history with more than 128 million album sales. He has won 2 Grammy awards over his career spanning three decades.

Taylor, who Brooks named one of his daughters after, said he was honored to perform the singer's 1992 hit song "The River".

"It's meant so much to me that Garth has mentioned me over the years as one of his influences," Taylor said.

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, located in Nashville, Tennessee, serves to honor the history and traditions of country music. Inductees are voted for by a panel of members, which includes artists such as Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton and The Everly Brothers.

Country music veteran Connie Smith, who is often hailed as the vocalist all country female singers strive to be, was also inducted on Sunday.

The singer, whose hits include "Then and Only Then" and "Nobody But a Fool Would Love You," was the first female country artist to have a number one hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart with her 1964 song "Once A Day," which topped the chart for eight weeks.

"I'm excited and nervous and proud and thankful and blessed," Smith said when accepting her membership. "I believe it was God's destiny for me to be a girl singer in country music. I'm proud to be part of the country music legacy."

Smith was welcomed into the Country Music Hall of Fame by member Merle Haggard, while Lee Ann Womack, the Whites and the Quebe Sisters performed Smith's hits on stage.

Country music artist Hargus "Pig" Robbins, 74, was inducted into the Hall of Fame by harmonica whiz Charlie McCoy.

Robbins, blind since childhood, has overcome obstacles to become one of the most respected musicians in the industry, playing with artists including George Jones, Bob Dylan, Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty.

The Best Way to Peel an Apple for Cooking or Baking

The Best Way to Peel an Apple for Cooking or BakingThe Best Way to Peel an Apple for Cooking or Baking Peeling an apple isn't rocket science, but if you're looking for a method to safely minimize the amount of flesh you lose while giving you sizable chunks of peel you can use for other things, this method from the folks at Food52 is worth a shot.

You'll need a vegetable peeler and a knife for this one, and you cut the top and bottom of the apple off in small pices so the apple is flat on both sides. This makes it easy to hold the apple safely to use the peeler on it, and lets you slide off flat, straight sections of peel that you can save for mulling spices, fruit jelly, or even apple tea. You also end up with an easy-to-handle apple left behind that's simple to core or chop into chunks for baking or cooking.

Of course, if you're just going to eat the apple raw, this is a lot of work just to get the peel off (and who wants to lose the top and bottom?) but we can see it being useful if you're going to dice, slice, or chop up the apple for cooking.

Weight Loss Does Not Lower Heart Disease Risk From Type 2 ...

From Science Daily?..

An intensive diet and exercise program resulting in weight loss does not reduce cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke in people with longstanding type 2 diabetes, according to a study supported by the National Institutes of Health.

The Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) study tested whether a lifestyle intervention resulting in weight loss would reduce rates of heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular-related deaths in overweight and obese people with type 2 diabetes, a group at increased risk for these events.

Researchers at 16 centers across the United States worked with 5,145 people, with half randomly assigned to receive an intensive lifestyle intervention and the other half to a general program of diabetes support and education. Both groups received routine medical care from their own health care providers.

Although the intervention did not reduce cardiovascular events, Look AHEAD has shown other important health benefits of the lifestyle intervention, including decreasing sleep apnea, reducing the need for diabetes medications, helping to maintain physical mobility, and improving quality of life.

?Look AHEAD found that people who are obese and have type 2 diabetes can lose weight and maintain their weight loss with a lifestyle intervention,? said Dr. Rena Wing, chair of the Look AHEAD study and professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University. ?Although the study found weight loss had many positive health benefits for people with type 2 diabetes, the weight loss did not reduce the number of cardiovascular events.?

One Direction May Need A New Name! We Want Justin Bieber Money? The Charming 5?

With their label facing a $1 million lawsuit by a U.S. group with same name, MTV's Twitter followers suggest new names for U.K. boy band.
By Gil Kaufman

What's in a name? Apparently a lot, since British boy band sensation One Direction's label is facing a $1 million lawsuit
and request for an injunction from using the name by an American lad group with the same name.

While most people have never heard of the five-piece One Direction from the U.S., they got together before the reality TV-spawned U.K. version and are claiming that their more popular Brit doppelgangers are destroying the goodwill they've built up on these shores.

Though One Direction U.K.'s spokespeople have not commented on the suit and a representative for the band's U.S. label offered a no comment at press time, we set up the hashtag #New1DName to ask MTV News' Twitter followers to pre-emptively offer up some alternate names the lads should consider as they wait of the lawyers to hash things out.

Among the names suggested: The Driven (@tasharea101), The Charming 5 (@officialjai), Chillin' Boys (@finindah), All4You (@AttilaSn), Making Moves (@AttilaSn), SMilesHi (@AttilaSn), TurnItUp (@AtillaSn), We Want Justin Bieber Money (@maguiiMARS), 5HotGuys (@ShimmerJBieber), Parabola (@Teepoper), 5 Boys 12 Nipples (@Alison_H), Only cute Boys (@maguiiMARS), New Reflection (@SteffanniHannah), Naughty Boys (@OlaKozlowska), Drunked Boys (@OlaKozlowska), Plebzone (@markfinlayson), Sex Gods (@PhoebeOulton), The Wee Diddys (@markfinlayson), Ham Wednesday (@kdaniellee), 5B (for 5 Boys) (@officialjai), Fall Sky (@tasharea101) and the very clever JABB (Just Another Boy Band) (@DebdoodleDeb).

A number of you found some interesting variations on the directional theme: Wun Dierecshin (@SaifQuadri), Direction One (@karennfaith8), FU1 Direction (@SheriMeibach), New Direction (@clermont703), One Direction. (@ManuelaMonster), One Inspiration (@tasharea101), Wrong Direction (@bbeanss_), No Direction (@hooLingrit) Other Direction (@bbeanss_), The Band Formerly Known As One Direction (@SheriMeibach), The Directionz (@vennee), 5 Directions (@SwaggerKidNate), OneDestination (@Phoebe_Cassell) and our staff favorite, Juan Direction (@nicolebritttany).

And then there were the ones who clearly have a fixation on particular members: Liam and the Forks (@ClaraGelcer), Liam Against the Spoons (@ClaraGelcer), Niall and the Potatoes (@ShimmerJBieber), Zayn and the 4 Others (@JeremyCabalona), Zaynito and the Burritos (@Emily1D_xo), Louis and the Ostriches (@xsarahmusgrave) and Louis and the Carrots (@ClaraGelcer).

If 1D do end up changing their name it wouldn't be the first time a band has had to do so because of a previously existing entity. Late '90s Irish boy band Westlife were originally known as Westside, but had to give up that name, and another British act, The Verve, had to add a "the" to their name to avoid a conflict with the famous Verve jazz label.

David Bowie was born David Jones, but decided to invent a stage name to avoid confusion with late Monkees' star Davy Jones and electronica duo the Chemical Brothers started out as the Dust Brothers, but switched things up after a lawsuit from the same-named production pair best known for helping to piece together the Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique. The Charlatans had to add a "UK" to their name to avoid a lawsuit from a defunct American band from the 1960s and Blink-182 decided to tack on some numbers to settle a dispute with the Irish band Blink.

Some bands have different names depending on where they are touring, such as Jack White's side group the Raconteurs, who are known as the Saboteurs in Australia for legal reasons. For similar reasons, reunited Brit poppers Suede have to tour as the London Suede in the U.S. (see also Wham UK and The English Beat).

Sometimes, though, bands have enough cash to buy the name they really want, such as grunge gods Nirvana, who settled out of court with a London group from the 1960s for around $160,000.

If One Direction have to change their name, what do you think it should be? Hit us at hashtag #New1DName to offer up your suggestions.
