Tape shows cruise ship crew denying emergency (Reuters)

ROME (Reuters) ? A crew member of the capsized Costa Concordia told the Italian coastguard the vessel had only suffered a power outage and there was no emergency onboard, even after passengers had put on life vests, according to a new recording aired on Thursday.

News channel Sky TG 24, which broadcast the tape, said it was the first radio conversation between the coastguard and the cruise ship after the liner, carrying 4,200 passengers and crew, hit a rock off Tuscany's coast on Friday night and keeled over.

The conversation began at 10:12 p.m. (4:12 p.m. ET), about 30 minutes after the accident, Sky TG 24 reported.

By then, many passengers had called relatives on their cell phones asking them to alert the police, who in turn told the coastguard to check on the state of the ship.

"Good evening Costa Concordia, please, do you have problems on board?," a coastguard official asks the bridge.

An unidentified member of the crew replies: "We've had a blackout, we are checking the conditions on board."

The coastguard asks: "What kind of a problem? Is it just something with the generator? The police ... have received a phone call from the relatives of a sailor who said that during the dinner everything was falling on his head,."

He says some passengers were already wearing life jackets.

The crew member simply repeats that there has been a blackout. "We are checking the conditions on board," he says, promising to keep the coastguard informed.

Eleven people were killed in the accident and 24 are still unaccounted for, although some of the dead have yet to be identified.

The captain of the ship, Francesco Schettino, is under house arrest and has been accused of multiple manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship.

In another leaked recording released this week, the Italian coastguards are heard angrily pleading with Schettino and telling him to return to his listing ship.

The ship operators have blamed him for the disaster and praised the rest of the crew for their efforts to save lives. Passengers have complained that they were left for hours waiting in lifeboats, stairwells and assembly points before the order to evacuate was issued.

Cormac McCarthy Sells a Script

It's always a thrill to read about some upstart, young first-time screenwriter catching a lucrative break in Hollywood with a spec script, so let's hear it for Cormac McCarthy!

The New Mexico-based writer has reportedly sold a thriller called The Counselor, about a successful, respected lawyer who gets in over his head during a dalliance in the drug underworld. Steve Schwartz, one of the producers who made the acquisition as part of a "sizable deal," told Deadline's Mike Fleming: "Since McCarthy himself wrote the script, we get his own muscular prose directly, with its sexual obsessions. It?s a masculine world into which, unusually, two women intrude to play leading roles. McCarthy?s wit and humor in the dialogue make the nightmare even scarier. This may be one of McCarthy?s most disturbing and powerful works."

Fleming adds that the script is "contemporary, and set in the Southwest" -- also unusual for McCarthy, who is previously best known for a slightly obscure oeuvre of novels including Blood Meridian, All the Pretty Horses, The Road and No Country For Old Men (the latter of which sparked a brief but ultimately fruitless flirtation with the film industry in 2007). The writer has even entered a representation agreement with ICM. When it rains it pours! Nice work, kid.

Ness, The Restaurant Discovery App, Adds Crucial Mapping Feature

Screen Shot 2012-01-18 at 4.34.24 PMI made heavy use of Ness's restaurant-finding iOS app during a recent trip through the East Coast, because lots of places are still sadly short on Yelp reviews, and I wanted a quick way to find the best local spots to eat. While I got some good results, I would have been all over a new feature that Ness has just pushed out in an update today: maps. Yeah, another restaurant app with a map. You're not shocked, I'm guessing, but you should take a closer look because of the data that Ness offers. It uses machine learning technology that uses a variety of social signals that you provide it from Facebook, Foursquare and Twitter, as well as your behavior and other data, to figure out which places you'll like the most. The result is often what you're hoping for -- suggestions for great places that you might not have seen on other restaurant discovery apps, or anywhere else for that matter.

Big earnings could drive Google shares to new high (Reuters)

NEW YORK/CHICAGO (Reuters) ? Investors' optimism for Google Inc (GOOG.O) is running high, setting the stage for another jump in its shares to an all-time peak after the Internet search company reports results Thursday.

Options investors appear to be betting on more gains for the stock, which hit a record high of $670.25 on January 4. The stock has since pulled back by about 6 percent, closing at $632.91 on Wednesday.

Traders have been purchasing Google calls, which grant the right to buy the stock at a fixed price up to a certain date, at a greater pace than its puts - or rights to sell the stock at a preset price - heading into earnings due after the market close on Thursday.

"The options market is positioned bullishly ahead of results. Call options have been bought over the past few weeks," Credit Suisse equity derivatives strategist Terry Wilson said.

Investors have bought nearly two calls for every put option as a new position on three U.S. options exchanges over the past 10 sessions, according to Schaeffer's Investment Research, an Ohio-based options research firm.

That call-to-put ratio of 1.93 is higher than 99 percent of the readings taken over the past year, suggesting bullish optimism heading into the results, said Joe Bell, senior equity analyst at Schaeffer's.

Google, which almost always reports earnings a day before options expiration, is known for volatile post-earnings moves in its shares. The company has beaten earnings estimates 77 percent of the time since the second quarter of 2005, said Kevin Pleines, analyst at Birinyi Associates, in a report on Wednesday.

After beating estimates, Google shares have opened higher 65 percent of the time, averaging a 4.1 percent gain the next morning, he said.

But after missing estimates the stock opened lower 100 percent of the time for an average loss of 6.6 percent. Also on the day after results, from the open to the close, Google shares have traded lower 62 percent of the time, regardless of whether the results beat or miss, according Pleines.

"This time traders are expecting slightly lower volatility as there appears to be greater confidence in the company's ability to deliver solid results," said Dan Nathan, founder of riskreversal.com, a New York-based firm specializing in options trade ideas.

Google's fourth-quarter net revenue, which excludes fees shared with partner websites, is expected to jump 32 percent to $8.4 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

But there are voices of caution, warning that any negative surprise could put heavy selling pressure on the stock.

"Google is a stock that is surrounded by a lot of optimism from Wall Street analysts and option speculators. This sets a high bar on the earnings report, and any disappointing news could leave the stock vulnerable to the downside," said Bell, of Schaeffer's.

If the news is good, Bryan McCormick, an independent quantitative analyst at Deepfoo Analytics in Las Vegas, sees the first upside breakout for Google stock at $635.80, its 10-day moving average, which would put the stock back on the upside path it has been on since October.

If the news is bad, the stock is likely to break below its 50-day moving average at around $618.38, triggering a potential bearish pattern that could send the stock down to the $575 area, McCormick said.

(In 9th paragraph corrects to show that the full-day change is for the day after results, not for the second trading day after the release of results)

Wikipedia to be blacked out over anti-piracy bill

Wikipedia will black out the English language version of its website Wednesday to protest anti-piracy legislation under consideration in Congress, the foundation behind the popular community-based online encyclopedia said in a statement Monday night.

The website will go dark for 24 hours in an unprecedented move that brings added muscle to a growing base of critics of the legislation. Wikipedia is considered one of the Internet's most popular websites, with millions of visitors daily.

"If passed, this legislation will harm the free and open Internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States," the Wikimedia foundation said.

The Stop Online Piracy Act in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Protect Intellectual Property Act under consideration in the Senate are designed to crack down on sales of pirated U.S. products overseas.

Supporters include the film and music industry, which often sees its products sold illegally. They say the legislation is needed to protect intellectual property and jobs.

Critics say the legislation could hurt the technology industry and infringe on free-speech rights. Among their concerns are provisions that would weaken cyber-security for companies and hinder domain access rights.

The most controversial provision is in the House bill, which would have enabled federal authorities to "blacklist" sites that are alleged to distribute pirated content. That would essentially cut off portions of the Internet to all U.S. users. But congressional leaders appear to be backing off this provision.

Tech companies such as Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, eBay, AOL and others have spoken out against the legislation and said it threatens the industry's livelihood. Several online communities such as Reddit, Boing Boing and others have announced plans to go dark in protest as well.

The Obama administration also raised concerns about the legislation over the weekend and said it will work with Congress on legislation to help battle piracy and counterfeiting while defending free expression, privacy, security and innovation in the Internet.

Wikipedia's decision to go dark brings the issue into a much brighter spotlight. A group of Wikipedia users have discussed for more than a month whether it should react to the legislation.

Over the past few days, a group of more than 1,800 volunteers who work on the site and other users considered several forms of online protest, including banner ads and a global blackout of the site, the foundation said. Ultimately, the group supported the decision to black out the English version of the site.

Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia who first announced the move on his Twitter account Monday, said the bills are a threat to the free, open, and secure web.

"The whole thing is just a poorly designed mess," Wales said in an email to The Associated Press.

Wikipedia is also requesting that readers contact members of Congress about the bill during the blackout.

"I am personally asking everyone who cares about freedom and openness on the Internet to contact their Senators and Representative," Wales said. "One of the things we have learned recently during the Arab Spring events is that the Internet is a powerfully effective tool for the public to organize and have their voices heard."

Wikipedia will shut down access from midnight Eastern Standard Time (0500 GMT) on Tuesday night until midnight Wednesday.

This is the first time Wikipedia's English version has gone dark. Its Italian site came down once briefly in protest to an Internet censorship bill put forward by the Berlusconi government; the bill did not advance.

"Wikipedia is about being open," said Jay Walsh, spokesman for the Wikimedia foundation. "We are not about shutting down and protesting. It's not a muscle that is normally flexed."

Russian space probe crashes into Pacific (AP)

MOSCOW ? A Russian space probe designed to boost the nation's pride on a bold mission to a moon of Mars came down in flames Sunday, showering fragments into the south Pacific west of Chile's coast, officials said.

Pieces from the Phobos-Ground, which had become stuck in Earth's orbit, landed in water 1,250 kilometers (775 miles) west of Wellington Island in Chile's south, the Russian military Air and Space Defense Forces said in a statement carried by the country's news agencies.

The military space tracking facilities were monitoring the probe's crash, its spokesman Col. Alexei Zolotukhin said. Zolotukhin said the deserted ocean area is where Russia guides its discarded space cargo ships serving the International Space Station.

RIA Novosti news agency, however, cited Russian ballistic experts who said the fragments fell over a broader patch of Earth's surface, spreading from the Atlantic and including the territory of Brazil. It said the midpoint of the crash zone was located in the Brazilian state of Goias.

The $170 million craft was one of the heaviest and most toxic pieces of space junk ever to crash to Earth, but space officials and experts said the risks posed by its crash were minimal because the toxic rocket fuel on board and most of the craft's structure would burn up in the atmosphere high above the ground anyway.

The Phobos-Ground was designed to travel to one of Mars' twin moons, Phobos, land on it, collect soil samples and fly them back to Earth in 2014 in one of the most daunting interplanetary missions ever. It got stranded in Earth's orbit after its Nov. 9 launch, and efforts by Russian and European Space Agency experts to bring it back to life failed.

Prof. Heiner Klinkrad, Head of The European Space Agency's Space Debris Office that was monitoring the probe's descent, said the craft didn't pose any significant risks.

"This one is way, way down in the ranking," he said in a telephone interview from his office in Berlin, adding that booster rockets contain more solid segments that may survive fiery re-entries.

Thousands of pieces of derelict space vehicles orbit Earth, occasionally posing danger to astronauts and satellites in orbit, but as far as is known, no one has ever been hurt by falling space debris.

Russia's space agency Roscosmos predicted that only between 20 and 30 fragments of the Phobos probe with a total weight of up to 200 kilograms (440 pounds) would survive the re-entry and plummet to Earth.

Klinkrad agreed with that assessment, adding that about 100 metric tons of space junk fall on Earth every year. "This is 200 kilograms out of these 100 tons," he said.

The Phobos-Ground weighed 13.5 metric tons (14.9 tons), and that included a load of 11 metric tons (12 tons) of highly toxic rocket fuel intended for the long journey to the Martian moon of Phobos and left unused as the probe got stranded in orbit around Earth.

Roscosmos said that all of the fuel will burn up on re-entry, a forecast Klinkrad said was supported by calculations done by NASA and the ESA. He said the craft's tanks are made of aluminum alloy that has a very low melting temperature, and they will burst at an altitude of more than 100 kilometers (60 miles).

The space era has seen far larger spacecraft crash. NASA's Skylab space station that went down in 1979 weighed 77 metric tons (85 tons) and Russia's Mir space station that de-orbited in 2001 weighed about 130 metric tons (143 tons). Their descent fueled fears around the world, but the wreckage of both fell far away from populated areas.

The Phobos-Ground was Russia's most expensive and the most ambitious space mission since Soviet times. Its mission to the crater-dented, potato-shaped Martian moon was to give scientists precious materials that could shed more light on the genesis of the solar system.

Russia's space chief has acknowledged the Phobos-Ground mission was ill-prepared, but said that Roscosmos had to give it the go-ahead so as not to miss the limited Earth-to-Mars launch window.

Its predecessor, Mars-96, which was built by the same Moscow-based NPO Lavochkin company, experienced an engine failure and crashed shortly after its launch in 1996. Its crash drew strong international fears because of around 200 grams of plutonium onboard. The craft eventually showered its fragments over the Chile-Bolivia border in the Andes Mountains, and the pieces were never recovered.

The worst ever radiation spill from a derelict space vehicle came in January 1978 when the nuclear-powered Cosmos 954 satellite crashed over northwestern Canada. The Soviets claimed the craft completely burned up on re-entry, but a massive recovery effort by Canadian authorities recovered a dozen fragments, most of which were radioactive.

The Phobos-Ground also contained a tiny quantity of the radioactive metal Cobalt-57 in one of its instruments, but Roscosmos said it poses no threat of radioactive contamination.

The spacecraft also carried a small cylinder with a collection of microbes as part of an experiment by the Pasadena, California-based Planetary Society that designed to explore whether they can survive interplanetary travel. The cylinder is attached to a capsule that was supposed to deliver Phobos ground samples back to Earth.

Igor Marinin, the editor of Russia's Novosti Kosmonavtiki magazine, said on Russia's NTV television that it would likely be destroyed.

January 17, 1995: The Kobe earthquake and early Antiseismic Architecture

In the morning of January 17, 1995 a strong earthquake hit the Japanese city of Kobe and despite the modern city infrastructure was assumed earthquake-proof more than 6.000 people were killed, 26.800 injured, 46.000 buildings destroyed or damaged and more than 300.000 people were made homeless.

The Kobe earthquake lasted for 14 to 20 seconds and reached a magnitude of 7.2 after Richter (7 according to the Japanese intensity scale ? shindo, the maximal possible value), the strongest earthquake in western Japan since 1923. The devastating earthquake was not directly connected to the nearby subduction zone of the Philippine Sea Plate, but generated along a local fault system formed by the intersection of the Nojima fault with the Suma fault (see also KOKETSU et al. 1998). The epicentre was located in the Akashi strait only 20 kilometres to the west of Kobe, the hypocenter was situated in a depth of just 10 kilometres. Such a shallow earthquake was not expected to occur in Kobe and the vicinity to the city amplified the disastrous effects of the shakes.

The earthquake damaged seriously the traditional buildings of the residential areas in the western and eastern part of the city; people were surprised asleep in their homes and killed or injured by the collapsing houses. The expressway of Hanshin, opened in 1962, was build according to the earthquake-resistant construction directives of the time; however it collapsed partially during the earthquake as the horizontal shear movements pulverized the concrete of the supporting pillars.
The harbour of Kobe, one of the most important in the world and situated on an artificial island, was severely damaged. The vibrations of the earthquake liquefied the soil and groundwater was pressed out from the pores, fissures opened in the ground and mud inundated parts of the harbour. The basement of many buildings became instable in this water-sand mixture and parts of the harbour slipped into the sea.

Based on the observations of the collapse of the Hanshin expressway and the devastation of the harbour the Japanese government improved the already severe guidelines for anti-seismic buildings.
A sort of anti-seismic construction method was already known in ancient Japan as many old pagodas show characteristics that can minimize the dangerous oscillations of a building caused by an earthquake. In a pagoda the central column, supporting the weight of the entire building, is made of a single log. Like a shaft of bamboo (the largest species can reach a height of 30m) this central column can swing in all directions and adsorbs most of the kinetic energy during an earthquake.
The various floors of the pagoda can move independently and are connected to the inner central column by a complicated construction made of wood, acting like a spring or shock absorber it will also reduce dangerous horizontal movements.

The first modern principles of anti-seismic buildings were introduced at the beginning of the 20th century in Tokyo. The earthquake-proof ?Imperial Hotel? was commissioned in 1915 and inaugurated in 1923 as a luxury hotel for foreigners in imperial Japan. It was planned by the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), who visited Japan for the first time in 1905.

Fig.1. The ?Imperial Hotel? in Tokyo (ca. 1930s-40s), image in public domain.

The site for the hotel seemed unfavourable for such a large building, located in the seismic zone of Tokyo on a 2,4m thick organic soil resting on 20m of soft alluvial sediments.
On such an unstable ground engineers normally choose a deep basement, trying to reach stable rocks or ?anchoring? the building in the underground. Surprisingly Wright planned a very shallow basement with just 2-3m depth. He argued that a deep foundation would transfer the oscillations of an earthquake from the ground to the building; however the alluvial mud of the construction site should adsorb the seismic energy and the hotel could float on the sediment like ?a battleship floats on water.?
The hotel had several ulterior features designed to minimize the destructive effects of an earthquake:

    - The pool in front of the entrance was not only a decorative element, but provided water to fight fire. This element in fact saved the hotel from the firestorm raging after the 1923 earthquake.
    - Supplementary reinforced structures on the outside of the building provided extra support for the floors.
    - The walls were not constructed simply with bricks, but with a sort of innovative sandwich technology: reinforced concrete between an extern and intern layer of bricks.
    - The walls of the lower floors were thicker and stronger than the walls on the upper floors, with small openings and few windows.
    - A light copper roof would not oscillate as strong as a massive roof, reducing the danger of collapse of the entire building.
    - Supplementary ?seismic separation joints?, made of ductile lead, were inserted into the walls of the building; during an earthquake the single segments and floors should be able to move independently.
    - Pipes were not encased in the concrete, but could swing in cavities hidden in the walls.
    - Wright avoided unnecessary decorative elements on the outside of the hotel, which during an earthquake tend to break and can strike dead people.

September 1, 1923 Tokyo was hit by a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.3 after Richter, 5.000 buildings collapsed and thousands were heavily damaged.
Wright anxiously awaited information on his hotel and two weeks later he received a telegram from the Japanese businessman Baron Kihachiro Okura:

?Hotel stands undamaged as monument to your genius ? Congratulations?

Wright passed this telegram to journalists and helped so to perpetuate a legend that his hotel was completely unaffected by the earthquake, maybe even the only building still standing in Tokyo!
In reality the building was damaged; the central section slumped, several floors bulged and four pieces of stonework fell to the ground ? however the building was still standing.
Ironically the building?s only main flaw was the shallow basement. During the earthquake the basement sunk by 0,6m into the liquefied mud and in the subsequent years continued slowly to sink into the ground. The damage and instability of the entire construction finally resulted in the necessity to demolish the entire hotel in 1968.

However many of the anti-seismic features introduced by Wright are still used today and hopefully many new inventions will minimize the deadly effects of future earthquakes.

Ship owner: 'Significant human error' by captain likely

The search for survivors continues from a capsized cruise ship off the western coast of Italy. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

    ?

By msnbc.com staff and news services

    Updated at 4:45 p.m. ET:
The owner of the capsized Italian cruise ship issued a statement Sunday saying it appears the ship's captain was at fault. in the tragedy that has claimed at least five lives. Fifteen more people, including two Americans, are still missing.??

"While the investigation is ongoing, preliminary indications are that there may have been significant human error on the part of the ship's master, Captain Francesco Schettino, which resulted in these grave consequences," Costa Cruises, a subsidiary of U.S.-based Carnival Corp., stated. "The route of the vessel appears to have been too close to the shore, and in handling the emergency the captain appears not to have followed standard Costa procedures."

    Updated at 3 p.m. ET:
The captain?was spotted on land during the evacuation, and he ignored pleas by?officers that he return to his ship and honor his duty to stay aboard until everyone else was safely off the vessel, a Coast Guard official said Sunday.

"We did our duty,"?Italian Coast Guard Cmdr. Francesco Paolillo told The Associated Press, referring to efforts to get Francesco Schettino back on the Costa Concordia Friday night.

Schettino, who is in police custody while?officials investigate the cause,?has insisted he didn't leave the liner before all passengers were off, saying "we were the last ones to leave the ship."

According to the Italian navigation code, a captain who abandons a ship in danger can face up to 12 years in prison.

    Updated at 12:15 p.m. ET:
Divers searching for missing passengers and crew from the capsized Italian cruise ship found two more bodies on Sunday?but?are facing dangerous obstacles themselves.

The vessel could suddenly move and sink into deeper waters, and floating objects inside the ship as well as muck are hindering divers.

"There are tents, mattresses, other objects moving which can get tangled in the divers' equipment," Italian Coast Guard Cmdr. Cosimo Nicastro said Sunday.

Francesco Schettino, the captain of the Costa Concordia, is taken into custody in Grosseto, Italy, on Saturday.

Officials were going to huddle soon to see how long the underwater search could safely continue, he said.

In order to find their way out, divers are using a long cord they hook near the point of entrance and unroll as they work.?

Three people have been found alive after most of the 4,200 passengers and crew escaped on life boats, fishing boats and even swimming to shore, but 5 are confirmed dead and 15 more are missing.

    Updated at 10:40 a.m. ET:
Two more bodies were recovered from the capsized Italian cruise ship, raising the official death toll to 5, as investigators looked into accusations that the captain abandoned ship early.

Patrick Capito was a passenger on the capsized Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia and describes swimming to shore after attempts to get into a life raft failed.

The bodies of two elderly men still in their life jackets were recovered by divers?at the emergency?gathering point near?a restaurant area. Fifteen people are still unaccounted for. Two of those are U.S. citizens, the U.S. Embassy in Rome said.

    Updated at 10:10 a.m. ET:
Two?survivors of the Italian cruise ship that hit a reef are among those who said the captain abandoned ship early. A prosecutor earlier said he's investigating those allegations.

Ophelie Gondelle and David Du Pays of Marseille, France,?said they saw the captain in a lifeboat, covered by a blanket, well before all the passengers were off the ship. They insisted on telling a reporter what they saw, so incensed that ? according to them ? the captain had abandoned the ship before everyone had been evacuated.

Obama, Netanyahu talk after peace contacts resume (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed recent Israeli-Palestinian talks on Thursday as U.S. officials signaled that a January 26 target date for the two sides to exchange proposals could slide.

Obama and Netanyahu, who have at times appeared out of sync on Middle East peace efforts, spoke after two rounds of diplomatic contacts between Israeli and Palestinian officials in Jordan's capital in recent weeks.

"They reviewed the recent meetings between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators in Amman and the president reaffirmed his commitment to the goal of a comprehensive and lasting peace in the region," the White House said in a statement summarizing a phone call between the leaders.

The exploratory talks follow a long break in negotiations after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas suspended talks 15 months ago over Israel's expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.

The "Quartet" of international peace mediators - the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations - sought in October to revive the talks, laying out a timeline they said should yield concrete proposals from both sides by January 26.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Thursday this deadline could slip if there are signs of progress in the initial discussions.

"Our priority all the way along has been for these parties to start talking directly to each other, so that's why we consider what's going on in Jordan so encouraging," Nuland told a news briefing.

"We don't want them, or anybody else, to get so fixated on the date that it chills the mood. We want them to keep going on the hard work that they're doing together."

Nuland said the Quartet still hoped its broader roadmap, which calls for the Palestinians and Israelis to reach a peace agreement by the end of 2012, would hold.

"Obviously we want this to happen as soon as possible. That was the point of putting dates on the table," Nuland said. "But again, when dates become a straightjacket, it can take you backwards. We want to go forward."

U.S. officials hope the contacts may open the door to a discussion of the central issues in the conflict, and lead the two sides to state their positions on the borders and security arrangements of a future "two-state solution".

There has been little public comment from any of the principals thus far. Nuland said all sides were agreed the Jordanian government would make whatever statements were necessary about the closed-door discussions.

The major issues dividing the two sides include the borders of a Palestinian state, the fate of Jewish settlements on the West Bank, the status of Jerusalem and the fate of Palestinian refugees.

UFC 142 weigh-in: Anthony Johnson misses weight for his middleweight fight, Dana White rips him

What the heck just happened? Insert some stronger language and that had to be Dana White's initial reaction to Anthony Johnson's huge gaffe at the UFC 142 weigh-in.

Johnson, a massive 170-pounder, took this fight at 185 pounds months ago. Thought by some to be the smaller fighter against Vitor Belfort, Johnson clocked in at a shocking 197 pounds!

UPDATE: According to MMAjunkie, Johnson actually came close to the 186-pound limit and then was told to rehydrate to be safe.

White was alerted to the issue earlier in the day and announced right around 4 p.m. ET that Johnson wasn't going to make weight.

"Rumble Johnson is not on weight today. And when I say he's not on weight he's way off weight," White said on FX.

White rightly flips out when fighters miss weight by three or four pounds. This was 11 pounds (186 is allowable middleweight limit)!

"As a fighter, you are a professional. You are contracted to come in at a certain weight. This is not the first time this has happened with Johnson. He moved up to 185 pounds so this wouldn't happen to him at 170 pounds, and here we are in the same position again. [Belfort] came in like a professional on weight, and Anthony Johnson comes in as a total unprofessional, way overweight."

The next step to officially making the fight tomorrow is also mind-blowing. Fighters like to rehydrate and replenish their body after the weigh-in. Johnson has to watch his intake. If he balloons higher than 205, Belfort said he won't take the fight.

"The stipulation is, Vitor does not want him to weigh more than 205 pounds by tomorrow at like 2 o'clock in the afternoon," White said. "So we'll see how this thing plays out. He'll weigh in today and have to weigh in tomorrow."

Johnson was making his debut at middleweight after waging his previous 10 UFC fights down at welterweight. The 27-year-old will be fine 20 percent of his show purse. If he loses badly, he may have to worry about a pink slip arriving soon from the promotion. Let's hope there was some legitimate excuse that can excuse Johnson's big mistake.

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich says questions he's raising about Mitt Romney's record as a venture capitalist are "not the centerpiece" of his campaign in South Carolina.

The former House speaker said Romney's record as head of the equity firm Bain Capital is "an important question," however, because he predicated his campaign on the argument that he has the necessary business experience to restore the economy.

Gingrich says, "I'm campaigning as a pro-jobs, Reagan conservative in South Carolina."

The Georgia Republican was asked on Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends" about a man's statement at a campaign event Wednesday that Gingrich should lay off questions about whether the former Massachusetts governor benefited from a culture of corporate greed at Bain Capital. Gingrich told the questioner, "I agree with you."

    FOR KIDS: Self-cleaning clothes

Simply a few hours of sunshine cleans specially treated cotton fabrics

    Web edition : Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Cleaning clothes usually requires soap and water to remove stains and smells, and a tumble in the dryer or an afternoon on the clothesline to dry. The time and energy needed to turn a heap of dirty laundry into a pile of clean clothes might make people wish for clothes that just clean themselves. ?

That wish is a step closer to coming true. Recent experiments show that cotton fabric coated with the right mixture of chemicals can dissolve stains and remove odors after only a few hours in the sun.

Exclusive: Head of China's CIC tipped as next finance minister (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? The head of China's $410 billion sovereign wealth fund is the front-runner to become the country's next finance minister, two independent sources said told Reuters, another move in the country's broad leadership reshuffle that will culminate in 2013.

Lou Jiwei, 61, currently chairman of China Investment Corp (CIC), is tipped to replace Xie Xuren as finance minister, said the sources, who requested anonymity to avoid political repercussions.

"Lou will step down (as CIC chairman). He will go to the Finance Ministry," one source with ties to China's top leadership told Reuters. This was confirmed by a second source close to the ministry.

The change would come as part of the Communist Party's leadership transition that will see President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao hand over power to a younger generation.

In October, China appointed new bosses for its top banking, securities and insurance regulators.

If elevated, Lou will lead a Finance Ministry that has been at the forefront of China's efforts to tackle the 10.7 trillion yuan ($1.7 trillion) of debt that local governments piled up as a result of China's stimulus program during the global financial crisis.

CIC declined to comment when reached by telephone, and the ministry was not immediately available for comment.

    TIMING UNCERTAIN

The timing for Lou to move into the finance minster's job was unknown, but it could be as early as October, when Xie reaches the mandatory retirement age of 65 for cabinet ministers or in March 2013 when the State Council, China's cabinet, undergoes a shake-up.

Last year, Lou wrote an article for the reform-minded journal Comparative Studies, laying out his views of the pressing financial and economic changes needed in China.

They included reform of personal income taxes, the fiscal relationship between the central and local governments, and capital account convertibility for the tightly controlled yuan currency.

CIC President Gao Xiqing, 58, a Duke University-trained lawyer, is likely to succeed Lou as chairman, barring any last-minute change, said a senior financial industry source who also asked not to be identified.

Lou initially had been tipped to head a new ministerial-level body that would manage the country's state-owned banks and non-bank financial enterprises, including brokerages, insurers, trust firms and funds.

Century Weekly, a magazine published by Caixin media, said last December that the proposal to create a financial State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, or SASAC, has been shelved.

A computer programmer turned economist, Lou was a vice finance minister before being promoted to manage the sovereign wealth fund.

He has not worked in the central bank but, according to official biographies, the avid golfer has co-authored several books and papers on economic reform with central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan.

Born on Dec 24, 1950, Lou's schooling was cut short by the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution when he was a teenager. After five years in the army, when he taught himself mathematics, he went to work in 1973 as a computer programmer at a big Beijing steelworks.

He won a place at the prestigious Tsinghua University, where he majored in computing, and then took a master's degree in economics from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a top government think-tank.

NASA's Fermi Space Telescope explores new energy extremes

    Wednesday, January 11, 2012

After more than three years in space, NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope is extending its view of the high-energy sky into a largely unexplored electromagnetic range. Today, the Fermi team announced its first census of energy sources in this new realm.

Fermi's Large Area Telescope (LAT) scans the entire sky every three hours, continually deepening its portrait of the sky in gamma rays, the most energetic form of light. While the energy of visible light falls between about 2 and 3 electron volts, the LAT detects gamma rays with energies ranging from 20 million to more than 300 billion electron volts (GeV).

At higher energies, gamma rays are rare. Above 10 GeV, even Fermi's LAT detects only one gamma ray every four months.

"Before Fermi, we knew of only four discrete sources above 10 GeV, all of them pulsars," said David Thompson, an astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "With the LAT, we've found hundreds, and we're showing for the first time just how diverse the sky is at these high energies."

Any object producing gamma rays at these energies is undergoing extraordinary astrophysical processes. More than half of the 496 sources in the new census are active galaxies, where matter falling into a supermassive black hole powers jets that spray out particles at nearly the speed of light.

Only about 10 percent of the known sources lie within our own galaxy. They include rapidly rotating neutron stars called pulsars, the expanding debris from supernova explosions, and in a few cases, binary systems containing massive stars.

More than a third of the sources are completely unknown, having no identified counterpart detected in other parts of the spectrum. With the new catalog, astronomers will be able to compare the behavior of different sources across a wider span of gamma-ray energies for the first time.

Just as bright infrared sources may fade to invisibility in the ultraviolet, some of the gamma-ray sources above 1 GeV vanish completely when viewed at higher, or "harder," energies.

One example is the well-known radio galaxy NGC 1275, which is a bright, isolated source below 10 GeV. At higher energies it fades appreciably and another nearby source begins to appear. Above 100 GeV, NGC 1275 becomes undetectable by Fermi, while the new source, the radio galaxy IC 310, shines brightly.

The Fermi hard-source list is the product of an international team led by Pascal Fortin at the Ecole Polytechnique's Laboratoire Leprince-Ringuet in Palaiseau, France, and David Paneque at the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich.

The catalog serves as an important roadmap for ground-based facilities called Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes, which have amassed about 130 gamma-ray sources with energies above 100 GeV. They include the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov telescope (MAGIC) on La Palma in the Canary Islands, the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) in Arizona, and the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in Namibia.

"Our catalog will have a significant impact on ground-based facilities' work by pointing them to the most likely places to find gamma-ray sources emitting above 100 GeV," Paneque said.

Compared to Fermi's LAT, these ground-based observatories have much smaller fields of view. They also make fewer observations because they cannot operate during daytime, bad weather or a full moon.

"As Fermi's exposure constantly improves our view of hard sources, ground-based telescopes are becoming more sensitive to lower-energy gamma rays, allowing us to bridge these two energy regimes," Fortin added.

PFT: Giants' Pierre-Paul goes all Joe Namath

    Greg Jennings, Jordan PughAP

Having played with both Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, Packers receiver Greg Jennings says he leans toward Rodgers as the better quarterback.

?They both bring different things to the table, but honestly right now I definitely have to go with . . . Aaron, his body of work at such a young age, his attention to detail, his discipline, I think it?s really second to none ? its un-paralleled,? Jennings told Ian O?Connor on ESPN New York 1050.

It?s easy to see why Jennings would be happier with Rodgers, because he?s catching more passes from Rodgers. In two seasons as one of Favre?s starting receivers, Jennings averaged 49 catches for 776 yards. In four seasons with Rodgers, Jennings has averaged 73 catches for 1,155 yards.

But is it really fair to say Rodgers has a superior body of work to Favre? After all, Favre played 20 seasons, won the MVP award at the end of three of those seasons, and still has about 55,000 more career passing yards than Rodgers.

What Jennings is really saying is that Rodgers is playing at a higher level right now than Favre ever played at, and that?s a reasonable assessment.

?You haven?t really found a QB that has done it the way [Rodgers] has done it,? Jennings said. ?I mean you have the young guys that are coming out and they?re making a huge impact in this game . . . but his attention to detail and his discipline to be perfect or so close to perfect I think that?s really going to separate himself . . . his study habits are . . . they speak volume for themselves.?

Fix Lag in Apps on the Galaxy Nexus with Ice Cream Sandwich [How To]

The Galaxy Nexus paired with Ice Cream Sandwich? Sounds like a match made in heaven. On their own, these two treats boast a variety of things. The Galaxy Nexus is the most recent Android power phone. Often called the phone of the year, the Galaxy Nexus boasts an amazing 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display and a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor with 1 GB RAM. Ice Cream Sandwich is the latest and the greatest version of the Android platform for phones, tablets, and more. With an intuitive user interface, you can navigate easily and can organize your daily activities using its many apps.

For those of you who communicate frequently using your devices, Ice Cream Sandwich also boasts a satisfyingly accurate keyboard and word predictions. It is designed to work without physical buttons, which only seems fitting that Ice Cream Sandwich has found its way into the Galaxy Nexus. But, not all beautiful things are perfect.

The Galaxy Nexus is the first phone on the market equipped with Ice Cream Sandwich right from the start. It is certainly something extremely exciting to veteran Android users who have had to wait patiently for every new update. Once you start playing around with it, however, you?ll notice something very wrong. Once of the biggest catches to the Galaxy Nexus and Ice Cream Sandwich marriage is the poor performance of apps. There is a lag so noticeable that scrolling is a nightmare.

Currently, there is no perfect cure for this problem, but there is a way to slightly improve it. The beauty of this is that you will not need cables, software, or any flashing to deal with it. The solution is right within your device.

Here?s the quick trick to making your apps run and perform faster on the Galaxy Nexus:

    1. Slide down the Notifications bar.
    2. Tap ?Settings?.
    3. In the Settings menu, tap ?Developer Options?.
    4. Scroll down the list of options and tap on ?Force GPU rendering?.
    5. Afterwards, kill all of your apps in the multitasking tray by flicking them off the screen or by restarting your device

Once you?re done, you?ll notice that the Galaxy Nexus will perform a little better, with a slight minimization in its lag. One possible cause of the lag is that some apps are not yet ready to run on Ice Cream Sandwich. If you run an app that fully supports Ice Cream Sandwich, however, you may not notice any performance problems.

Hopefully, future updates for Ice Cream Sandwich will bear good news for this little Galaxy Nexus disappointment, but until then, we hope that this quick fix works for you.

DNC e-stalks Romney, ignores others (Daily Caller)

The Democratic Party?s attack machine is compulsively obsessed with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Since Jan 1, the Democratic National Committee and its subsidiaries has fire-hosed 34 anti-Romney emails into the The Daily Caller?s mailboxes.

His fellow GOP candidates can?t get hate, nor even love, from the DNC?s messaging architects.

The anti-Romney pitch is being broadcast via many channels by President Barrack Obama?s re-election team, which shows every indication that it most fears Romney, partly because he does well as among swing-voting, upper-income people. ?Romney is the one they don?t want,? MSNBC?s Lawrence O?Donnell told BreitbartTV during a New Hampshire interview. ?They know they can beat anybody else. Romney, they think they can beat, but it?s a harder campaign.?

The most notable change within the DNC?s gusher is the gradual decline of the ?flip-flop? charge, and the emergence of a ?Mitt Romney will say anything to get elected? theme. That new pitch comes packaged with a pen-and-ink drawing from the 1989 John Cusack teen-throb movie ?Say Anything.?

The new theme is intended to help Democrats combine their discordant claims that Romney is a populist flip-flopper and also an out-of-touch elitist.

The new theme has been included in six DNC messages since Jan 7. Its only prior appearance was back in October.

However, the DNC?s message mavens have yet to reconcile their simultaneous claims that Romney is both a say-anything compromiser and an extremist whose statements will alienate broad segments of the voting public.

The other GOP candidates barely get a insult in the DNC?s diatribes.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been cited in just five emails since Jan 1, each of which was principally focused on Romney. On Jan. 3, for example, Perry was mentioned in an email who subject was ?Wasserman Schultz says Romney carries `baggage? out of Iowa.?

Former Senator Rick Santorum also received mentions in five DNC messages, but they too were focused on Romney.

House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a seminal Democratic Party?hate-figure, was similarly mentioned in eight DNC messages, all including Romney?s name in the subject line.

Huntsman was cited in just one message, but only because he too was criticizing Romney. The DNC email cited Huntsman?s criticism ? ?We became the top job creator in the country. Mitt in Massachusetts was number 47? ? but didn?t venture anything negative about the second Mormon in the race for the GOP presidential nomination.

The flood of emails mentioned Rep. Ron Paul only once, with the DNC passing on a Florida newspaper?s claim?that Paul, Santorum and Romney were all ?very extreme? on immigration issues. The DNC did not explain which candidates were merely ?extreme? on urging implementation of existing immigration law.
